This happens every other week on this site. I have no idea why it is so hard to make the chat work. And the worst part is that there's absolutely no communication about it. Feels like the owners have given up.

    always on the weekend.

maybe they run out of space and they don't work weekends?

Chat has been down for the last 3 days.  Don't know what's going on.  If you're on firefox, before sending a message, go to tools>browser tools>web developer tools.   A box will open at the bottom of the screen. Type your message and hit send.  If you get a green 200, the message was sent.  If you get a magenta 500, it was not.  Hoping it will be up and running, soon.

this is the same issue re-occuring that they fixed for a while.

if you're in the chat box *and* the other user is online right at that moment, your message may go through.

however, if they are offline, you have to use chat from that person's page for the message to go through.

I don't understand why they can't keep this fixed.  it's very frustrating.  between the hyper agressive ads and chat bugs, it's driving lots of people away to other platforms despite the rich community & content.

Yes, that's what I've found, too -- and your solution does work.  Like you, it mystifies me that the thing can't stay fixed.  Don't get me started on the ads.

Chat is still not working correctly. I have also had 5 messages stuck there (it says there are 5 unread but I cannot find them) for months now.

They are probably running a "How to destroy a formerly vibrant community" program. On the upside, you now get your first full-page ad even before you're fully logged in. Then, depending on the algorithm's mood, you suffer up to six more tab-stealing shit ads simply by clicking outlandish stuff like " Followers" or "LIKE/REBLOG". Things then calm down for a while; I don't stay long enough these days to know whether the ad cycle is repeated at intervals.

If there is more than one dude in a garage administering this sinking ship - don't you think it's time for you guys to talk to us about this, instead of bravely ignoring all requests for explanations?

After 3 days, I finally got a response from the Powers (aka the guy in the garage) ... To paraphrase:  Sorry about that, we've gotten a LOT of emails about this problem and we have notified the devs.

Re Ads: I like when you click on the Archive icon and you get TWO ads instead of the Archive.  Solid.

Mrlithian - You actually got a reply? Wow! And they've notified the devs, have they? Last we all heard was they were trying to hire devs. That ad (dated mid October of last year) is still the second entry on themunch and used to lead their notification column on the blog feed page (until superseded by telling us they were banning something or other to protect bandwidth.)

Oh, you must NEVER click on the Archive icon :-)

But ...but ... that's where all the GOOD stuff is!

Yeah, I was pretty shocked that they sent me their answer ... then I nodded and went back to sleep.

So, it goes.  We stay on because it's easy, right?

I'm  not sure I'd call staying on "easy". More like being morbidly attracted to potential disaster. You never know whether those fucking ads give you trojans, viruses or whatever. That's why the refusal of whoever runs this mess to comment or respond to numerous requests for an explanation is so annoying. They've made one public statement in the past six months, and that had nothing to do with user requests or this site's continued functionality problems.

And after all - they must be making some money from these disgraceful ads which open whether you click on them or not. So we - the dwindling user base - are the ones on whose back that income is generated. I for one have not given, nor even been asked to give, my consent to methods I consider to be extremely dubious, shady and untrustworthy. You'd think we deserve a little respect, right? Nah, not from these guys.

Well, I meant "easy" as compared to leaving and starting over.  I have over 5,700 followers, and my blog goes back to 2018, with countless pages and posts.  Some others have even lengthier histories than me.  How do I start over?

As for the leadership's apparent lack of concern and their silence ... I'd almost bet that they say they're offering a free service, and What do these buncha whiners want? Egg in their beer?

That's a good point. Starting over is a drag (pardon the pun), more so since there are few alternatives. reblogme (great management) still have a small user base while newtumbl (stable and functional) feels anonymous with little sense of a community developing. Then again - what good is a sense of community if its members can't even communicate with one another, and technical problems continually mess things up?

Yes, bdsmlr offer a free service. But that free service has been marred for 15 months by technical incompetence, appalling communication and an increasingly destructive and aggressive ads policy. It's the users who provide the income through the ads, right? Treat them with respect! The current owners, however, have taken over a functioning service and turned it into a seemingly rudderless mess which people use at their own risk. Free - yes. Safe? Not sure at all.

Yes, thanks -- I discovered that earlier.

I can only say, Hallelujah.  Been a long wait.

Opposite problem. I clear and delete messages and they keep coming back. I’ve got 25 messages “stuck” someplace that show as a notification number, but don’t appear anywhere.
Have no idea who sent them or when.

No feedback at all from the help desk to my many requests on how to fix this.
