It's been affecting me for months as well. I only just came across for the first time the phenomenon I described. And I was wondering whether anyone else could confirm it.

It's a known phenomenon. Others have experienced it and one gal explained why in a buncha web server lingo I'm too dumb to understand or repeat, but all that's buried in the other threads here.

Oh, web server stuff and all that is way beyond me too.  I admire anyone who does understand it. Perhaps if the devs did, they could fix this thing ...

Okay, so I just saw a post - by @Jennie, as it happens - which gives a complete rundown on this chat thing. I'm quoting it below in full:

" I've figured out the broken chat!!!!

If both people are logged in, chat works (with some slowness -- up to 45s or so delay before the message is delivered.)

If the other person is NOT logged in, you cannot message them through the chat window.

BUT -- you can still respond with a message through their blog. You need to navigate to their blog (NOT the sidebar pop-out blog -- you must go to <blog>.bdsmlr.com) and hit the little chat icon to send a chat. In the "Send a Private Message to Jennie" (or whomever) you can send them a message and it will get to them.

Not the most useful system for chatting, but it does allow you to respond when they are offline.

    The technical:

Chat messages are sent via an HTTP/2 POST to /newmessage2. The newmessage2 handler seems to be broken if it can't send a notification to the receiving part. But the "Send a Private Message" is done via a POST request to /newask (not to be confused with "Ask", which is /newasknew). Both /newask and /newmessage2 go to your chat history, but only /newask is working when the receiver is not online.

Reblog/share this with literally everyone. And you probably want to turn you Online Status to On/Visible until this gets fixed."

Again - this is Jennie's blog post from some time back. Worth sharing here!

That's it. Way over my head. Thanks for digging it out for us.

Yeah, I  was sort of coping with stuff like "the newmessage2 handler", I mean, I was at a loss as to what it might signify, but it didn't feel threatening. But when I got to "... a POST request to /newask (not to be confused with "Ask", which is /newasknew)", I felt an urgent need to end it all, and only that small stubborn inner voice whispering: "Don't Jump Off The Balcony!" prevented me from taking drastic measures. Howe CAN people reel off terms like these with such ease and obviously KNOW what they're talking about? The mind boggles, and admiration abounds :-)

Fix the chat. I did work perfectly at one time, why doesn't it work now? Can't send links, can't send pics, can't send messages, what is wrong with this? Are you guys really maintaining this site or just phoning it in until it collapses....

If it was easy to fix, or even medium to fix, they would fix it. They cannot be unaware how important it is.

Found this on the site, has anyone had any success with it?

Hey there everyone! I figured out a fix/workaround for the ongoing chat problem where some messages are not being delivered: just “share” a post with that person. After that, you’ll be able to chat as normal. Not guaranteed to work but so far so good for me! (Note that this isn’t 100% reliable but it’s worked more often than not for me. Keep trying it till it works for you. Otherwise just use something else)

To share, just click the three dots below any post, click share, and click the account name. Try it on this post.

I don't want this issue to be something we stop complaining about. The lack of a working chat feature ruins this site.

Yeah, but complaining obviously doesn't have any effect. Either they don't read our complaints/requests/pleas, or they read them but don't give a shit, or they do give a shit but haven't got the expertise to fix stuff, or they don't even exist any more. And at the risk of repeating this mantra ad nauseam - if they ARE still around, IT WOULD HELP IF THEY HAD THE DECENCY TO AT LEAST TALK TO US!

And yes - not having chat on a site like this is like chopping someone's legs off and then telling them to take part in that hurdle sprint.

I'm glad my post made it into this discussion. And I should have continued to stay away from zendesk after I got back...

The problem has been going since mid-April, working for most of May, and broken again all June.

To get technical once again, I noticed last night (for the first time, I actually test this every time I'm on desktop), that sent messages are now returning the 200 OK code, instead of the 500 Server Error. The messages still aren't getting through, but there has been a change on the backend. (edit: And now it's back to 500 Server Error)

Chat remains the biggest issue with the site I believe.

Do we think the folks (or folk) in charge realises how important it is for the community, and will they be able to fix it?

Oh hey the chat dropdown looks slightly different.

(No, chat still doesn't work right.)

Yes, chat has been optically changed a bit. But it's still dysfunctional.

They did give an explanation for the recent BLOGS UNAVAILABLE thing, so having become more and more critical of their silence, I'll be glad to say thanks for beginning to talk to us :--)

Last night (July 23), sending chat messages to offline users was working again.

Before we get too excited, it was down for two weeks in April, working most of May, and down all of June and most July. And it's still slow to load (somewhat better), possibly requiring page refreshes.

But for now, it's working again.

I can confirm what @Jennie reports - every part of it. I was alerted to this in another thread earlier today and, not for one second believing I'd meet with success, tried it. And there it was, slow, cumbersome but actually working.

Yes, ti worked for a while earlier this year before collapsing completely; but if nothing else, this is further evidence of work proceeding behind the scenes, and that must be viewed as good news :-)
