I hate to say it, because it will imply that I am satisfied with the site, but: "Beggars can't be choosers." The site is spotty, bug-ridden, and frustrating, but it's free. Not sure it'd be any better if it was a paid site, but if it's free then we take what we can get.

Too bad to see so many problems, especially the chronic ones. They've had a good thing, and there's still plenty there, but it's steadily deteriorating and that's not good.

Yes, BDSMLR is free. Still, without members, it would not exist at all. Someone else in another thread pointed out that it's a kind of bargain: We provide the membership, the site owners provide the infrastructure; and the combination of both is what generates ad revenue. In other words, while we need BDSMLR to pursue our interests, they - in pursuit of eventual profit - need us.

So, looking at it from the perspective of the owners, it seems to me rather shortsighted to let BDSMLR deteriorate to the point where people leave it in droves.  They may not owe us a thing - but if they want to continue to generate revenue, they surely owe it to themselves to provide a functioning site.

And in this sense, while I agree we can't be choosers, probably we shouldn't think of ourselves as beggars!

Thanks for two excellent comments. It clarifies something that had been niggling with me. I've always believed in "you get what you pay for" but it's a bit more complicated than that.

Been over a week since I submitted a request due to a recurring problem with chat and not a word from admin. You would think they could at least give a progress update. The people who run this site don't care about the site or the people using it. Anyone waiting for it to be fixed will be waiting a long time.

So, looking at it from the perspective of the owners, it seems to me rather shortsighted to let BDSMLR deteriorate to the point where people leave it in droves. They may not owe us a thing - but if they want to continue to generate revenue, they surely owe it to themselves to provide a functioning site.

The reality is that the users are in no position to fix anything. That's entirely up to the owner(s), and all signs point to them having abandoned it. Whether it's shortsighted or not is also not for anyone else to say. The reality is that we don't know who the people are; what their skills are or are not; what their other projects are; what their priorities are.

Thus, I have been trying to limit myself to saying what I think I know, along with some elementary speculation about the site's future. I have tried to stay away from speculating about the motives of the site owners; no one can know what they are, so I regard that tack as whipped cream on dogshit.

The bottom line is "take it or leave it." I'll take what I can get, but the site's operational issues are becoming so acute that I'm thinking I'll soon have no choice but to head for greener pastures. That said, I've enjoyed the site and would like it if the owners would get their heads out of their assholes and fix it, but that's their call and no one else's.

How do you know the owners have their heads in their assholes John Blank.

You went to a lot of effort to take the high road of not speculating about motive, their skills, priorities or depth of involvement with the site only to finish by scooping whipped cream on your own shit.

Yes, whipped cream or whatever is being scooped on what, I must say I share Frustratedemailer698's view. There is a contradiction between warning against assumptions, and then making one.

But the other thing I wanted to say is, I agree that, as John Blank says, "The users are in no position to fix anything". However, the owners clearly are, and so long as they continue to offer their site for public use, it seems to me wholly legitimate to be "to be speculating about" their motives. They are asking us to put up with all manner of badly functioning broken stuff. Surely it's okay to ask what makes them do that?

If they actually did "ask us to put up with badly functioning stuff" that would at least be something... because that would be communication.

The very least they could do is tell us what is happening, good or bad.

Yes - as Teas & Denial says, "the very least they could do" is talk to us. But the silence persists, as in "What do WE care, if you don't like it, you can go to hell, schmucks".

We've now (June 16) had a whole day of not being able to post anything. That's a repeat of what happened some time back. Then as now, no explanation given by bdsmlr. Not a single fucking word. None. Zero. Technical problems occur. But have the decency to comment and explain.

HEY, BDSMLR - HAS IT OCCURRED TO YOU THAT QUITE A FEW PEOPLE,  RELYING ON YOUR GRAND PROMISES, HAVE PUT EFFORT INTO BUILDING THEIR BLOG, HAVE BEEN MAKING FRIENDS, HAVE RELIED ON THE SITE WORKING SO THEY MAY FEEL THEY BELONG SOMEWHERE?

If you no longer wish to provide that environment - fair enough. But tell us. Like it or not, you started this (or at any rate took it over), and many thousands of us have supported you all the way.  But that means you have certain responsibilities, right? Live up to them or hang your heads in shame!

I submitted a request on 5/9 and received the usual "your request has been received" blather.  I check the status on 6/8, and it stated:  awaiting your reply.  I sent the following:

I just checked the status of this request.  It's showing "awaiting your reply" sent 15 days ago.

This email is the last correspondence I've received from you.

As you can see, it's dated May 9, 2021.

Which means that you have done absolutely nothing!

That status should read, "we haven't done anything", not "awaiting on your reply"

    Johnny

I just checked, and the status is now "open" it's in red instead of green.  Whatever that means

Over a month, and basically nothing.  So, good luck on having a request taken care of

I am losing patience. I have tried to be optimistic that things will get better but nothing from the top for months now is insulting. It's not bad communication, it's no communication.

Whoever is running this site (if they actually exist) they should be embarrassed.

Yes, they SHOULD be embarrassed. But for that, they'd have to have a sense of shame. And if they had a sense of shame they wouldn't have remained silent while letting things go to rot as they have.

Wow, we got an update on the main page today. Just saying they are still here and updating things.

Doesn't say much, but it's good to know they are alive :)

Yes, basically they're saying they are doing their best, and that they are massively short of staff. I know what it's like getting stuff done when there aren't enough people able to do the job, and so I guess patience is the thing once again.

At any rate, it's GOOD they made that statement, and perhaps this could be the start of regular updates? That would, I'm sure, generate a huge amount of good will :-)

One statement after months of being ignored? It almost as if this webpage is now run by a single individual. I really hope BDSMLR gets their act together. I like the webpage and I want to see it continue. One thing I've learned over the years was to keep a backup. If you've got time is recommend keeping a backup blog on newtumbl. It doesn't have as many features but at least it's functioning. What started as a backup blog there has become my main blog. Now BDSMLR is more of an archive/backup.

Good luck everyone in finding a solution that works beset for you!

Five months of silence on the front page and just about the same on Twitter. How hard is it to post a few dozen words? I hope none of us are holding our breath.

    Finally got a response to my ticket on my inability to post text to chat and here was their lame reply;

    Greetings,

Apologies for the late response as we are receiving a high volume of tickets at the moment.
Our dev team should have resolved this issue regarding the problem on messenger.
Please continuously clear Cache and Cookies from your web browser.
Also, make sure the ad blocker is turned off as it prevents some of the page’s features from appearing.

It's incredible that they think people are so stupid as to possibly believe that load of crap. Cookies and cache have NOTHING to do with the chat problems. I was willing to write this off as just a lack of concern or caring for the site but this clearly indicates they are trying to con people. They are deliberately LYING to members.

This place is now officially worse than tumblr and that is sad.

None of that stuff they told you is true and I humored their "suggestions" to make sure.

I sent a message to someone who'd managed to message me earlier: nothing

Tried to get at them via their page and the chat bubble: nada.

I sent a message to someone I hadn't chatted with in a while... once... the... messages... dropdown... finally opened... and... all... my old... chats... loaded... and the... messages... in ... the... conversation... finally... populated...

And not only did it not go through, it moved the person to the top of my chat lists without even sending the message.

And there's no way I'm leaving my adblocker off for these janky ads any longer than one or two refreshes

Chat - one of the central functions of this kind of site - has been fucked for months. In their recent statement, that wasn't even mentioned though the complaints about it abound. They say they're "focusing on critical bug fixes right now", and you'd think that chat, in that context, deserves at least a word or two.

I've also found that none of the work-arounds (including one I wrote about elsewhere some time back) work, at least not reliably. Chat basically ought not to involve jumping through a bunch of hoops and then still be thwarted. Chat's about clicking a button, writing into the chat box which as a consequence promptly opens up, hitting SEND, and knowing the message will be safely & speedily delivered. Everything else isn't chat, it's a bad joke.

I had exactly the same reply as above for my moan about chat being down.

I only just now saw the post from Frustratedemailer698 which quotes bdsmlr's reply to a complaint about the fucked chat function:

Please continuously clear Cache and Cookies from your web browser.
Also, make sure the ad blocker is turned off as it prevents some of the page’s features from appearing.

WHAT? They've been pushing that CLEAR CACHE line from the start of this breakdown, and from the start it's had nothing to do with any malfunctions. And it certainly has no effect on chat. And what's this about switching off adblockers? Makes no fucking difference, and surely they must know that.

I've been saying how bad their continued silence has been. But getting this kind of reply is actually worse! Why? Because it adds insult to injury.

May 9th, I opened a ticket, gave the blog name, browser, and operating system credentials.  Yesterday, June 27, they again asked for the blog name, as may email doesn't show in their system.  Now, with all the information provided when the ticket was opened, why are they asking again?  It seems that not only are they incapable of fixing anything, they can't read.  Perhaps they should go back to Primary School.

Johnny Angel - on their way to Primary School they'd probably get lost, then would desperately try to clear their cache, and finally decide that not finding their Primary School was all down to adblockers.

At least we are getting some updates on the main page now... we even have a poll up today!

"Honestly, we'd like to give you an update on your favorite features too, but we're still understaffed." But you got time for this poll?

Okay, maybe what they mean is "Honestly, we'd like to report progress with any of the chronic and/or recurring problems you've been beset by for months without us making even the slightest attempt at an explanation BUT due to a continued shortage of people qualified to do the job, the total amount of progress, regrettably, is zero." That would make sense.

But what is this "fun little poll" about that you have time to run? I mean, okay, so I'm utterly useless when it comes to code and programming and so on (which is why I'm not running a social network), but - couldn't you direct your energies towards things like the chat function rather than polling us as to whether we are doms, or what? And are you telling us that work on fixing major problems has been put off until whenever?

This really is all rather weird :-)
