Messaging Notifications

I have had this for the last month also. Combined with the message system not working at all really. I get messages very rarely and most I try to send simply vanish.

Still having the same issue. But now it seems to have gotten worse. If I leave a message for someone in the side chat window, or on my messages page - the outgoing message disappears completely. I have no idea if they got it or not. When I refresh the page - it's like it never existed.

    Frustrating just levelled up.

This was an ongoing issue since about Apr 12. If both people weren't logged in, the messages would never be sent. It was fixed (for me, and everyone I've chatted with since then) Apr 27. If you are still having a problem with messages disappearing (in the last day or so), you should submit a request and let them know some users are still having a problem. If you haven't tried, give it a shot and see if it is working now.

My messages have now largely been fixed. I do still have a phantom one unread message, but I can send, read and get messages now.

I also have one phantom unread message, and have done so for the last ~2 weeks (probably 4/12, same as noted above).

If chat mostly worked I wouldn't care very much, but it doesn't, so this is just an extra frustrating problem.

the phantom unread message notification disappeared yesterday (and I noticed the bdsmlr github was updated with some noted improvements, so likely that's why).

chat in general is still flaky to load up, and I have to press send multiple times for new messages, but it seems like some work is actually (finally) happening.

Along with this, there will be new messages WITHOUT a flag showing.  I’ve taken to simply checking messages every time on all my blogs, knowing that the new message flag may or may not be working.

What’s worse is when you try to start a new message chain with another blogger; you have absolutely no idea whether the Send widget worked or didn’t.  I was sending and getting multiples of the same message because there’s no indication that it’s in the process of sending the message.  I had taken to pressing the send once and waiting.  Today, I pressed send, waited, and received a notice that the captcha had timed out, so it WASN’T working in the background.  All other functions, like posting or reblogging alter the widget to let you know it’s processing your request; why not the send function in messaging?

I've been showing one message, (that's not there), off and on for some time.  Now I'm showing two.

Hey!  I'm up to 3 now.  Showing I have 3 messages, and a blank chat box.  Gotta love it!

Now I'm showing 20 messages in the chat bubble.  I know there's a problem with chat, but this is fucking ridiculous!

I just had this happen today. (Just 1 message, though).

I was able to make it go away by opening the most recent chat, and scrolling up for several "fetches" of the history. You may need to do it for all of your more recent chats. May or may not help; it worked for me.

There are two things going on:

I know that if someone sends a message through the "Send a Private Message" icon on the blog, there's a long delay before confirmation, and people tend to hit that several times. More than 5 times and the oldest message will be past the first chat history fetch. You have to scroll up to mark those messages as "read". This one is easy to test, easy to reproduce, easy to fix, and is actually the "correct" behavior, albeit annoying.

But there's something else going on too. I can't say exactly what it is (I don't have the source), but I suspect there's a request timeout in the fetch/read code that prevents some messages at some point in the chat from being marked as "read", but if the most recent message gets marked as "read", you no longer (correctly) get the red "new message" indicator. Vague, I know. But its the only theory I can come up without looking at the source that explains the behavior I saw.

I I appreciate the information, for sure.  Yes, the Send has quite a delay, and as I said above, I had taken to hitting Send, and waiting, sometimes going to some other task while leaving the window open.  Then, last week, I followed that procedure, and it told me the Captcha had timed out, so there was nothing going on in the background. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Lol, I've been having a few ghost messages for the last couple months. There were a few days where they faded but they eventually came back. Not sure when it happened, maybe a week or so ago,  but I currently have 79 ghost messages. I logged on about a week or so ago & found 93 messages waiting, that's far too much, I scrolled through my chat to see & I read the actual messages, by the time I was done I had 79 unread messages that weren't there. When I get new messages it counts up from 79 & when I read them it counts down. I'll send a ticket & see what happens.

One (painful) way to see if your request is working is to look at the network traffic under the developer tools. You have to open it before you click send.

    Ctrl+Shift+E in Firefox

Ctrl+Shift+J in Chrome, then click the Network tab.

After you hit "send", it will show a POST to /newask. (Clicking around a bit you can find exactly what was sent). If you see that POST come up, you know you clicked the "Send". It will either return 200 OK (the message was sent to the recipient) or 500 Server Error (the message was not).

Useful on any website to see if a problem is on your end or the server's end. (Usually the server for bdsmlr, usually your end for every other website.)

I'm getting message notifications in my email, but then can't find them on the site.  In fact, the ONLY thing I'm able to do is access my original blog, but none of the others.  None of the features are working at all, except of course the ads that pop up when I try to do anything.

With an overpowering sense of humor one might find all this rather amusing. I get correct message notifications, sometimes even in real time, complete with notification sound. But frequently, it takes ages for messages to display. I may have to open and close the message box again and again before anything happens; sometimes  it helps reloading the page three or four times, sometimes it doesn't. Other times, everything works somewhat as expected, in a sluggish sort of way.

But on the upside, as Bootman26 points out - the ads work flawlessly...

Here's a twist for you. I had a new message (six actually, they hammered the send button), and no notification. I only noticed because there was someone i didn't recognize at the top.

As for getting them to load (or rather, not load), I've noticed that if I scroll the page at all before opening a chat conversation, the thread seems to never load. (Of course, even if i don't there's still a 30% chance it won't load.)

For what it's worth, just to throw one more anecdote on the pile, I've experienced all the problems and "solutions" in this thread.

Seems that chat is back to being mostly nonfunctional again.

I’ve taken to sending Asks and having blogger contact me via email.

Please fix chat. It's completely unusable at this point.
