    It really is a mess...

A lot of people have commented on the chat problem for weeks. Apparently, something that used to work just fine is now either beyond repair - or the new "devs" have not yet found the time to fix it. Or, of course, possibly they don't actually give a fuck. Who knows? Whatever, it's one of the things which further reduces the joy of using what's currently left of this site.

Admittedly, on desktop things have, on the whole, vastly improved over the past few weeks. Still, as has been pointed out before - communication is the thing. And that really does mean more than general twitter statements like "our devs are working flat out". Chat is a currently "a mess", as Marvin above sums it up. And it would be great to learn whether, and when, the mess may be cleared up, and chat restored to full functionality.

Some on here have suggested the bdsmlr team create their own blog on site which people may then subscribe to. It's a good, and ridiculously obvious, idea. How hard can it be to write a few lines once or twice a week at least, slap on the blog for every subscriber to see it on their dash, and that way keep people updated?

I would really love a fix for this as well. I use the chat feature - and the associated pic sharing feature - more than any other feature on the site (except for reblogging). I'm sure there's a shit-ton of spaghetti code in there, but really, other sites manage this just fine. There's probably an out-of-the-box drop-in replacement somewwhere.

On desktop, it sometimes kind of works a little, then it messes up again. Sometimes, I get notifications in that little bubble thing, other times I don't. Sometimes, when I click on the chat symbol, the chats show up instantly. Other times, they don't. Sometimes, when I try to open an individual chat, it displays its content right away. Other times, it doesn't. Sometimes, a message gets sent. Sometimes, it doesn't. Sometimes - well I guess you get the drift.

And sometimes, I think: Why the fuck is it so difficult to get a feature to work reliably which elsewhere seems to cause no problems whatsoever? I won't mention the Site That Kills All Lust but it's annoying you can chat there with ease but you wouldn't want to have a blog there, while the site where you do want to run a blog has been acting up for months ...

I submitted a request for them where I told them what a mess chat was, about ... a week ago. The responded to my email within a day. The response said "Your request has been received & is being reviewed by our support staff." On one hand it's great they responded & so quickly, on the other I think more people will need to submit a request or complaint for the support staff to see how big a problem it is. Today especially, 4/13/21, I was answering some messages & sending some & quite a few were being dropped or lost & the rest were taking a few minutes to go through. I had to resend a few, so hopefully when I sign back later I won't see that I ended up accidentally spamming anyone, I did refresh a few times & wait about 10 or 15mins before resending any messages. Hope whatever they're doing it takes effect soon. I did appreciate them finally posting an update.

Rebeccarigs94: I submitted a ticket yesterday, and have not yet received a response. But don't get too excited about the response. Trouble ticketing systems like Zendesk generate automated replies.

In general, I think it would be fabulous if the team were more communicative. (Hey, guys, I'm a tech writer. I could be your communications person. I can do this on a consulting basis. PM me for rates. I'd even consider volunteering, if there were any cool perks). All we get is the occasional tweet saying they're working on something, but in terms of when we can expect things to work properly, it's anyone's guess. The occasional cryptic tweet we get is not super helpful, and I hate having to go to Twitter when there's a perfectly good way of announcing things here.

I am somewhat sympathetic to the developers. Like I said upthread, I'm sure there's a lot of spaghetti code in in the codebase, and the problem with that is that when you fix things, you often break other things.

Having said that, there's really no excuse for the chat system. Tons of sites have chat features, and I have NEVER seen one as bad as this. Hell, I used to work for a company that MADE chat systems. That company was about as dysfunctional as any I've ever seen, but their stuff at least worked (I won't suggest them because, like I said, highly dysfunctional and I don't like them, plus, their stuff ain't cheap.)

On top of everything mentioned above, they are now losing chats.  I gave a rather lengthy response to a message this morning, that is no longer there.  The only thing that seems to work with any regularity is the ads, which seem to pop-up anywhere and everywhere.  With all the revenue they are generating via the ads, they should be able to fix something, and keep it fixed!  And yes, give us updates right on the site, like they always did.

Michael Gorup: I would not be surprised if your response shows up again later. I've had that happen with pictures I've shared. Then again, maybe it won't. Who knows?

I've posted a message on my blog (https://filthanddepravity.bdsmlr.com) encouraging people to add to this thread. If y'all did likewise (or just reblogged mine), maybe we can make enough noise to get some attention.

Ortho Stice:  My boy and I both reblogged your post.  It may or may not do any good.  If you're someone who stays logged in, you may want to stop that.  We log in, try to do chat, cruise around a bit, then log off.  That is something they probably notice.  I've been looking around for a site similar to this one (that actually works), but haven't found one, as of yet.  Should the majority of us jump ship, en masse?  Now, THAT would get their attention.

Ortho Stice: Yeah, I submitted an updated version of "my chat is broken" complaint & got the same "Your request has been received & is being reviewed by our support staff" in about an hour or less so it's definitely automated. Should've figured that out myself to be honest. Hopefully they are getting the submissions or it's at least being sent to them, so enough of it should make them check it out. Michael Group: As for the messages not getting through, yeah, it's not all though. A few of my messages went through fine but some disappeared after I sent them. I could see my response but after I logged off & checked back in a little while ago it was gone. I let the people I was chatting with know I was resending my response because of the problems with chat & resent what I could remember of it & this time it didn't even wait until I logged off before disappearing. Chat's been problematic for the last couple months but there were workarounds, for instance I use my laptop usually & clicking the "View More" tag in the messenger & going to the full page messenger would make it run smoother. So would just refreshing the dash a couple times. Now none of that is working. If they'd just say that this is a matter of getting worse before it gets better, that it's because they're working on it, that would be fine.

IMPORTANT! Really ... did anyone know they launched the Github update page already? They even posted an update today! Why wouldn't they tell people that? It's a verified bdsmlr-dev account. Huh, okay, there is something about the chat there, they appear to be adding a tag system to it? Is that what's causing the issues? She asks the people who probably didn't know this exists already either...

Not sure I can post links here but just go over to Github & type bdsmlr-development in the search box. They've posted a couple updates about the different stuff they're working on & what they've fixed. This is ... more than a little annoying honestly, after that post about communication. Maybe they're testing it out & they'll be putting up the post about it launching on Twitter in a couple days. Either way, hope this helps everyone else.

I'm also having a lot of problems with chat currently. A lot of the people I chat with are not receiving my replies :( I dont know how to fix that or what is wrong...

I read about the github posted and you can see a link in the front page to that.

That's nice re github.  And there is a link on main page.  The fact that they are doing that, and not just posting on main page of site, tells a lot!  Even THEY (that faceless monstrosity) have no faith in their own site.  Rebeccarigs94 - no worries re name misspell.  It happens all the time.  I didn't even notice until you pointed it out.  Adding tags?  I don't use tags.  They are useless to me. My boy and I do a lot of role play, which is only with the user we are chatting with.  We don't want, or need, anyone trying to join in our chat.  I see a lot of post that use them, and they just say what's in the pic.  I have eyes.  I can see everything they tag.  Bottom line - fix the effing site....all of it.  And post updates right on the site.  They most likely have stock in github and twitter.

Lol, yeah, I only saw the Github link when I logged back on after sending the message to a few of the discussions on the front page here. Ah, well, never hurts to be sure I guess.

So am I not the only one who cannot receive or send messages atm? In the network tab I see a HTTP 500 error. Or is there a workaround for that?

500 error on every message. Basically no work around, means they broke the code that handles the messages something bad (or the server just died).
Only work around is to likely send people asks and keep them private (e.g. don't answer, just send them one back as the return message)

Yeah, chats gone down again. Chat started working quite well last night, around 10ish or 11pm & I was chatting with the three of my followers for a couple hours with no issues. Didn't check in today until I got home tonight & it's not working again.

Interesting, Rebeccarigs94.  Maybe things are looking up.  Fortunately, a couple of our chat buddies and I exchanged email addresses before the chat mess up.  It's not as convenient as chat, but at least we can communicate.

Yes, the asks are kind of the only way to communicate on bdsmlr. So I've exchanged wickr nicks through that. And the drafts are down too. So, not much to do on bdsmlr atm, it's like they're doing their best to get the site deserted.

Michael Gorup: Maybe, I mean the chat stopped working completely last night & most of today but I chatted easily with a follower this afternoon around 3pm. When that I happened I immediately tried to message some other followers just to make sure they knew what was going on & wouldn't feel ignored but none of those messages got through. I did however just message a few of them & it seems to have gone through, not by using the normal chat method, instead I opened their blog, click on their message icon & wrote my message in their submission box. It went through. Not sure that'll work for everyone but if anyone else wants to try it & say whether it went through or not that would help to see if it was just a random glitch or something.  I only submitted 2 messages, when I came back to my dash & refreshed my messages were showing in the chat in their chats. I should also say that pressing the Submit button didn't send the message immediately, had to wait a while & press submit again, be careful with that or you can end up resending the same message a few times.

Rebeccarigs94:  Thanks for the info.  The guys we chat with haven't even been online for awhile.  BUT, we've been exchanging emails.  The role play isn't the same as in chat, but it's getting done.  What my boy and I have been doing is sending each other inane messages, and none of them have gotten through.  Maybe they think chat isn't important.  In the "real" world, people are afraid to talk.  Your can see the fear in their eyes, the only thing you can see due the rest of their face being obscured my a diaper.  But I digress - a habit of mine.  Perhaps a majority bailout is what they're hoping for.  At this point, who knows?

Rosa Isabel Lopez Gomez: I've been trying it out at different times & it does work & someone else on the site has figured it out & written a post on it. Michael Gorup : Yeah, t would be nice if someone did that but for now someone else noticed what I did & did some work on it & they're written a post on how to get the chat to work. Over the last couple days I figured out some of iit, for instance you can chat with anyone, but only if they are logged on at the same time you are. Anyway, to both of you & anyone else, a women called Jennie has written a post on this workaround so be sure to read it & over the last couple days this has been working for me. She even wrote about going onto their blogs to send a message, I've done it a few times, it does work, thing is when you press send it doesn't always send so you need to click send then wait, jump back to your dash then back to their page, if it doesn't send then click it again. Anyway, you can find the post she wrote on my blog @SexySensualSwitch or the original poster @jennie. I'll see if I can link the post.

For a brief while, chat showed promising signs of being on the road to recovery. If so, it must have strayed badly, and once again appears to be lost in the forest of dev incompetence and/or indifference.  Now, you're lucky to even get messages displayed at all. If with any luck that finally does happen, trying to send a reply turns out to be a complete waste of time. You write it, you hit SEND, it does or does not get displayed - but either way, when later you open the message window again, it's no longer there. It seems that robots can dig up oxygen on Mars. Here on earth, devs cannot fix a simple function that used to work just fine.

On the github page they set up to give us "development updates", the most recent entry (of a total of two so far) is dated 13 April. It says there: "Working on integration with chat platform by post tags. There will be most popular tags define. User can click it and go to chat with others who is interested in particular topic."

What exactly does that mean? And how about fixing the basic chat function before you do anything else with the damned thing? That's just a suggestion of course, but it might not be a bad one.

The only other github entry, dated April 5, contains this gem: "platform improvement: the test environment is set up. We will test changes before deploying it to production. It's a good practice". That was well over two weeks ago. After three months of mayhem. wouldn't it be "good practice" to let us know how far you've progressed with once again providing a platform on which annoying whole page ads aren't the only thing that reliably work? This zendesk page is bursting with complaints about broken chat functions. As far as I am aware, bdsmlr have not addressed those queries, not on zendesk, not on twitter, not on github.

    Is that  "good practice" too?
