I haven't been banned, but then again my site is not strictly hardcore as I'm more into the fetish side of things.

I can still view my blog and upload photos on Microsoft Edge, but still can't do any editing. I'm sticking with BDSMLR for now until further notice.

Well, edit works for me. Mostly from drafts, not the front page. It works in lot of browsers. See no difference between the performance in these browsers, except for details. I asked admin about 20.000 lost pictures and got an answer: "we're working on it" since then I've only seen pictures disapear, instead of returning.

But I'll stay around. Maybe see if New Tumbl works better.

I think that on admin side, there's a lack of tech guys (if there ever was more then one). If I was their tech guy I would have thought about throwing in the towel as well. But that's all speculation

I'm keeping a second blog in new tumbl in case bdsmlr doesn't come back, the issue to me is that my blog is about videos and none of my followers are as interested with gifs and pics than they are to videos, so it wouldn't make sense to stay if that never get fixed. Lost tons of videos with the update as well (videos posted from 11 months ago onwards)

I signed up at newtumbl when it launched to placehold my username. I’ve popped onto the site a few times since to lurk. Lately I’ve begun queue posting a bit there.

I recall some users there being upset with some of the initial early navigation design changes, I think it may have been simplifying the various blog pages/views into a configurable single page. The main blog view is also the archive view. There is no tumblr-style side preview blog to quickly check out/reblog  another blog’s recent posts. Hmmm. Bdsmlr has separate archive view and also options like ‘show only posts I’ve made’ (however they word it). On newtumbl you’d be relying on tags to find your original posts I think.

The image and video uploader seems Very solid, tho- from my limited experience- you have to manually check a box with the rating of each post - 4 levels from sfw to x....and it doesn’t seem to memorize tags, at least the ones I use. Neither of these were big deals once I acclimated. Might be for some using lots of tags. *There may a way to semi-auto tag I haven’t stumbled upon yet.

There is no mass image uploader on newtumbl at this point. Again, not a big deal for me, but I occasionally use it here to post stray singles. Some users on bdsmlr seem to mass upload a lot- so maybe an issue for them.

Video playback there seems at least as good as Bdsmlr managed at it’s best. Video has always seemed secondary here (imho), tho it improved over time-until this latest major incident.

newtumbl currently seems less busy than Bdsmlr-but that could just be my newbie experience. Still, posts on other blogs (even seemingly popular ones) can have very low note counts.  And some blogs that I semi-recognize seem to be inactive/not very active -tho you might also say same for some here. Ppl try out a platform and move on.

Also, there *may* be some form of moderation there. Perhaps enforcing copyright stuff or maybe copying (stealing) an active gif maker’s work. Some of the gif makers who were active on tumblr at the end are there now (a few are here too). Just guessing on the moderation stuff. Somewhere there I saw a warning that my posts had to be ‘legal.’ Idk.

i will say that I’m very comfortable here when things are working normally. Unfortunately while the site is slowly getting back it’s functionality, the public silence from the Bdsmlr Admins after this second major service interruption in 2 years...is deafening.

I don’t believe anyone looks forward to beginning over on another platform. Still, can’t hurt to lay the groundwork for a backup acct if you have the time.

    ———
Edit- after looking at this thread: I don’t believe there’s an option for random queue posting on newtumbl, also no option to schedule that I could find.  While post scheduling is limited on Bdsmlr, it’s a nice feature.

Edit #2 - On another thread someone posted that “Edit My Blog” is now working here (2/24). Just checked & it works for me.

I honestly think the communication problems, and the slowness in getting everything back up is because someone quit, and the remaining staff is too overwhelmed dealing with a backlog of shit from the service interrupt.

Staff seemed to have a size of about 3. I know for a fact that at one point they were doing direct commits to production, based on incoming bug reports (they told me so). That's not the kind of thing you do when development and support are run by different people.

Every day has been better than the previous, so I'm still giving staff and this site the benefit of the doubt.

I agree Jenny. Bdsmlr Support always responded quickly when I put in a ticket for an issue with my blog. This happened maybe 8 or 10 times in two years. They’ve always been courteous and talked of planned updates, especially early on. During the year of the mass migration from nsfw Tumblr (2019) they continually improved the platform with new features.

If you were here in January 2019, there wasn’t yet a real queue, a drafts folder or side quick-preview blog. Those main features were added fairly soon along with improved video playback and a better chat system. Also a bunch of features I’m sure I’m not mentioning because I don’t use them much (search by tag on the dash etc etc).

And their continuing effort to stay ahead of the resource demand caused by site growth and usage spikes.  It seemed like feature additions slowed down some in 2020- maybe because they’d accomplished the major ones (queue, drafts etc). Or maybe the general weirdness of the last 11-12 months- though I got their usual quick response on a service request in January, 2021.

Their ceasing of public updates on Feb 2 about repair progress of this recent major incident points (to me, at least) to something going on behind the scenes. It could be staffing (e.g. a main tech/designer leaving) or some of the other scenarios ppl have mentioned here. Or a combination of things.

I haven’t contacted Support directly about site status and won’t speculate. I’m ok with things improving slowly and steadily.

I’ll always be grateful to Bdsmlr for stepping up their game quickly and bigtime when tens of thousands of ex-tumblr users showed up here in early 2019. 🤞that things return to status quo.

NewTumble doesn't really seem that great, but I made an account today just incase.

I would way rather keep my bdsmlr blog going. I'm willing to be patient though. If someone really quit and they can't keep up with the issues, then that could mean 1+ months to find a new person and another 1+ months to resolve issues~ So I'll probably just take a back seat on posting till summer, and see what else the internet has to offer in the mean time...

If anyone does happen to find a good alternative site, then I'd be interested.

I agree with Billyguitar. Let's give Bdsmlr a break. No use crying over spoiled milk.

I think Bdsmlr has spoiled us a bit. Uploading video's on Tumblr was limited, and the allowed size of pix was bigger than on Tumblr (at least at the time of the purge). They need lots of servers.

    Is BdsmlrI ban happy?
I don't think so. Not more than Tumblr. I have been banned from Tumblr several times, and have been reinstated all but one time after a mail asking "Why". One of the bans made me start a Bdsmlr blog, as a Laws have changed since then, which led to the purge of Tumblr, my final ban.

    Is Bdsmlr not delivering?
I have been very satisfied, until the second crash. In the months before the crash I had been busy with cleaning up the mess that the first crash had left behind (20000 pix with mismatched tags and captions). Months work down the drain overnight. So I was sad, to say the least. But that's my personal reason.
I keep seeing improvements, even though it's two steps forward on step back. But I'll give 'm time.

    Is there an alternative?
I have a NT account, but the possibilities are limited. And the blog doesn't look very attractive. Possibilities to make something personal of your blog are very limited. I must say that compared to Tumblr, these possibilities also are limited in Bdsmlr. I miss finding or building themes. I miss the extra possibilities the New X-Kit extension gave me to edit my blog. But Bdsmlr works and delivers... (most of the time)

Latest improvement, I've been on Bdsmlr since 2016. After the crash, the first 100 pictures I posted had disappeared. Now they're back. Small improvement but still, someone's doing something.

and 2 steps forward 1 step back... my dashboard is empty... How is yours?

edit 1: when infinite scroll is disabled the dashboard works. Not every tool, but pics are visible.

    Exactly Jan.

Right now, the biggest issue is that 3 cdns are down. And they're based on date, so if they are unrecoverable (like the last time), we're looking at lost data from 2019. Not the end of the world, given how most people use the site, and how quickly new content is generated.

The other major issue is the loss of the global tags database. But that can be rebuilt (and has been rebuilt in the past). Other issues like the queue randomizer will get fixed when they get fixed. They aren't mission-critical.

Fact is this site is 1000% more stable than it was just a week ago.

As for the lack of communication, after reading the shit storm on the Twitter feed, I'd stop talking to us too if I were staff. People were (and some still are) suffering serious entitlement issues. (If people want something to complain about, how about zendesk's two lines when trying to add a comment). It's good to see mature voices emerging.

(And as a side note to Jan specifically, you can do a lot with themes here too. Take a look at my blog (same username as zendesk) on desktop. Still wish we had x-kit, though.)

Jennie Well you've done a lot of groundwork there at @themesbyjennie. I had looked into the add css feature, but time was lacking. I also looked into the new x-kit github, but rewriting that thing would be to big a task for me. But Your themes bring me a step closer to a solution for my theme

I agree with what @Jennie says about shit storms etc. Some of the comments on twitter (and a few times on here too) do sound like their authors are "suffering serious entitlement issues". We can't say for sure what's going on behind the scenes, so it would be right not to jump to too many conclusions, or start insulting people.  Yes, some serious site fuckups of late -  but BDSMLR has also done a great deal of good work, and we should repay that with at least some basic respect.

As for moving, I have looked at NewTumbl, and for me it doesn't seem to work. I find it impersonal, cold, with what I think is a terrible "feed page". There is no sense of being able (or wanting) to build one's very own blog, like it can be done here, and used to be possible on tumblr. Or of building up a community.

Yeah, something like NewXKit would be great for BDSMLR, but really, I think that's secondary. This site on the whole - when it fully works - strikes a good balance between functionality and personal freedom. So I'll not leave, not as long as the site is basically working. I might post the occasional scream of exasperation though, but that's par for the course :)

BDSMLR updated their Twitter several times a few hours ago so we finally have an update. Really pleased that they seem to be working on improving the site and sorting out the problems we have all been experiencing.

I love this site... just glad it still seems to be showing signs of life.

Really welcome the updates from the admin team at BDSMLR. I love this site and will always be very grateful to them for providing me the opportunity to produce a fetish blog containing images of ladies in leather boots.

I will definitely be staying as I can still edit my blog using Microsoft Edge.

It is important to remember that BDSMLR is most likelya small, independent site, run by one or two people, probably in their spare time.  Our ad traffic is probably not even enough to keep the operating costs covered, let alone allow someone to earn a living, so repairs are likely being done during evenings and weekends. With such limited time and resources, putting the effort into the repairs rather than drafting and posting updates is (and should be) the priority.

BDSMLR is not ban happy, but they are trying to keep the site going among some difficult legal requirements. Every bad I've come across has been the result of content in violation of the terms. Also, just because you can't access a blog, dont assume theyve been banned; you may be blocked.

BDSMLR is a service someone is providing to support the community, and most likely are spending money out of pocket to do so. If you cant be patient, cant handle delays and outages, or feel like you need a commercial site with a full staff of people, than your masochism threshold is too low to qualify for the BSDMLR community anyway!

Its important to remember that BDSMLR are now banning blogs left right and centre, not for infringing on the rules, or terms - but for offending their own personal morals.  If they don't personally like your blog they will ban it.

Although incest type of roleplay (father-daughter) may not be on our terms, still it is an obscene matter that is unacceptable to be posted on our site.

to clarify, don't use terms like "Daddy Daughter"  because that is too wild and outrageous for the delicate moderators apparently.Nobody, no woman, ever says "Daddy" in sexual play. that's "Obscene" and despite not being in the rules they will perma-ban you.

Also remember, no CNC, that also is completely unforgivable. If you question why they are bannign on preference they might un-ban you for a while with a comment like this:

Greetings, We would like to let you know that we lifted the ban and all the posts are restored now.
Please be advised to follow the website's rules and regulations to avoid such issues in the future.
    https://bdsmlr.com/terms
    Thank you and enjoy.
P.S. Please refrain from using the "rape" word.

    So, don't say "rape" folks.

Also, tell Bruce Willis to never Say Murder. Because fiction is the same as real life

    This site is dead.

Honestly, I never had a real problem with the site's technical issues. It's difficult to maintain such a site's technical infrastructure if your financial resources are constrained. I actually found it rather amazing how much content it could host, considering how little money must have been coming in from the ads.

I did have an issue though with the lack of communication during February. Then, after three weeks of total silence, a whole bunch of tweets promising new features and whatever, whilst the original functionality wasn't even restored.

One sincere and comprehensive status update twice a week would be far better, and how much time would it take? 10 minutes per week?

This site had many great features (when they worked). I haven't found a real alternative yet. I'd like to hear suggestions from others.

NewTumbl seems OK, at least it's technically working, but I find the posting procedure very tedious. I haven't tried other sites yet.

Probably, I will stop posting content anyway, as I was seeing that many blogs have been banned from bdsmlr in the last weeks, including my own yesterday, despite being 100% sure, I haven't been posting anything illegal or against the bdsmlr's terms of service.

Jan: Agree.  Yesterday I was missing lots of images from cdn07, used between perhaps July 2019 to April 2020.  Now they are all back.

Things are getting better, and while it's been a tricky month for the staff, I think they're making progress, and that's good for us all!

@Jan  - cdn03 suffered a massive data loss over a year ago. Those images are now gone.

It was discussed in this thread: https://bdsmlr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360007082520

(I lost some pics in that crash... ☹️ )

Jennie I was there when the first breakdown happened. I did get my pictures back, but all captions and tags were messed up.

Most of the problems now are with cdn05. All pictures give a 404, but I estimate 50% is visible when you edit the post. So there must be a mismatch going on.

My compliments by the way, All over this Zendesk, I see you giving the answers the admins aren't giving. You know your stuff, and put effort into this site. Thanks for that. Hopefully it cools down all the complaints going around here.

We all want BDSMLR to work. We’ve all invested a lot of time and work into it.

But it’s not working.... so in the meantime.....

I’m going in a different direction and focusing my energies on starting a new email magazine on Substack:

    @Jan Jensen
I know much of the recovered data from the cdn03 loss was moved to cdn05 - my missing images redirect to cdn05 if I paste the image url from the page source directly into the address bar. I wonder if it's the same data causing issues, like it was an incomplete migration or something (this is pure speculation here.)

And thanks. My motives are not completely altruistic though. I want staff to be working on the feature requests, not dealing with complaints and support. If I can help deflect some of those, they have more time to work on making the site better, not just keeping it functional. 😀

    Jennie,

I hadn't thought of that copy/paste thing yet. The picture is supposed to be at

    https://cdn05.bdsmlr.com/uploads/photos/2019/03/3477/bdsmlr-3477-njYYG5sMI4-og.jpg

    but it's actually at

    https://cdno05.bdsmlr.com/uploads/photos/2019/03/3477/bdsmlr-3477-njYYG5sMI4.jpg

And there is an old fault we came across the extra "o" in cdn05.

The admins doing a simple find/replace script could fix it?
