Webp images in feed but not available for upload??

I'm curious why there are Webp type images in the feeds, but we can't upload them?

  Hi there!

  Reason is pretty simple. It's because we can do the conversion from gif to webp easily, but converting webp to gif (so that it would work on all the devices) is problematic.

  You all are doing a great job in general!

  May as well allow webp upload if all the downloads are coming as webp by default. Allowing it may inconvenience some with old systems, disallowing inconveniences others...but is also basically inconsistent with the download policy. 

  Anyway looks like webp support is increasing and the filesizes definitely blow up on conversion to gif.

  Images are serverd as .webm / webp when possible. However if device does not support them there's a fallback, but we can't do the conversion reliably for the devices which do not support it, that's still the issue for it. We of course hope to solve it as soon as possible.
